UFC 189: McGregor “Walks the Walk”

Despite the change of the main fight at UFC 189, Mendes vs. McGregor did not disappoint fans one bit. Both fighters put on a good fight to contest UFC’s interim Featherweight title. The fight was as action-packed as the fans had hoped, but in the end Connor McGregor defeated Mendes via a second-round TKO.

To Mendes’ credit he did managed to take down the Irishman a few times, highlighting his wrestling advantage. When all was said and done, McGregor’s superior Muay-Thai provided him with a significant edge. McGregor, one of the UFC’s most popular and divisive fighters, is no longer just a brash and loud-mouthed upstart who drives his own hype train far too fast. Thanks to his convincing win over Mendes, one the division’s top ranked fighters, people can’t say Connor is just “all talk,” because he shut his critics up by “walking the walk.”

This now fuels the fire of anticipation for an eventual belt unification fight between José Aldo and Connor McGregor even more, but that is something farther down the road at this point. For now, Frankie “The Answer” Edgar is licking his chops at a chance to take on Connor before the interim Champ faces Aldo.

The co-main event was no snoozer either. Robbie Lawler defended his Welterweight title against Rory MacDonald via fifth-round TKO, in what was one of the bloodiest fights in the division’s history. Both fighters were bloodied and battered after slogging it out in a five-round war, but it was Lawler who managed to deal more damage to MacDonald via punishing head strikes.

Move of the Night

The move of the night has got to go to Jeremy Stephens who finished off Dennis Bermudez with a brutal jumping knee to the jaw in the third round.

Needless to say, UFC 189 was an exciting and entertaining MMA event. Did your favorite fighter(s) win? If you want to bet on future UFC matches, sign-up now at Solaire Sportsbook! Click on the link to head over to their website.
